Moving in Winter: A Hudson Valley Guide to a Safe, Smooth Cold-Weather Move

By Spina’s Moving Services LLC – Pine Bush, NY

Not every move can wait for spring. Job changes, home closings, and family needs happen year-round, and here in the Hudson Valley that means plenty of moves happen in snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. Moving in winter is absolutely doable—it just takes a little more planning. At Spina’s Moving Services LLC, we move families and businesses across Orange, Ulster, and Sullivan Counties through every season. Here’s what we’ve learned about making a cold-weather move safe, smooth, and on schedule.

Plan Around Short Days

In December and January, the sun sets before 4:30 in the afternoon. Unloading in the dark on an icy driveway is slower and riskier for everyone. Ask for a morning start, and if your move is large, consider splitting it: pack and load one day, deliver the next.

We’ll help you choose a start time that gets the heavy lifting done in daylight.

Keep an Eye on the Forecast—and Have a Backup Date

Hudson Valley winters can turn quickly, and a nor’easter or an ice storm can make roads unsafe. Watch the forecast in the week before your move, and talk with your mover, landlord, and closing attorney ahead of time about what happens if the weather turns. If you’re moving out of a rental or closing on a home, find out how much flexibility you have on dates before you need it.

Safety comes first. If conditions look dangerous, we’ll talk with you early about your options instead of waiting until the morning of.

Clear a Safe Path Before the Truck Arrives

Shovel and salt driveways, walkways, porch steps, and the street in front of both homes. Make sure there’s room for the truck to park close to the door, and check your town’s snow emergency and winter parking rules so the truck isn’t blocked or ticketed. If you’re moving into a home in the mountains or on a long rural driveway, ask a neighbor or plow service to clear it the morning of the move.

A cleared path is the single biggest thing you can do to make a winter move faster and safer.

Protect Your Floors From Snow and Salt

Every trip in and out brings snow, slush, and rock salt with it. Put down floor runners, cardboard, or old blankets in entryways and main walkways, and keep a few towels by the door.

Our crew protects floors and doorways as part of the move, but a mat at each entrance helps too.

Move Cold-Sensitive Items Yourself

Freezing temperatures can damage some of your belongings in a cold truck: • Houseplants • Liquids that can freeze and burst, like cleaning supplies and beverages • Paint and other water-based products • Medications • Important electronics and hard drives Where you can, carry these in your heated car instead of the truck.

Let Electronics and Instruments Warm Up

When cold electronics come into a warm house, condensation can form inside them. Let TVs, computers, and gaming systems sit at room temperature for a few hours before plugging them in. Pianos and other wooden instruments are sensitive to temperature and humidity changes, too. Give a piano a couple of weeks to settle into its new home before scheduling a tuning.

We move pianos regularly as part of our specialty moving services and wrap them carefully for the cold.

Pack With the Cold in Mind

Cold makes some materials more brittle, including plastics, glass, and older finishes on wood furniture. Wrap fragile items with extra padding, and use plastic bins or double-taped boxes for anything that might sit near snowy doorways. Keep a separate bin of warm essentials—hats, gloves, a blanket, and a phone charger—with you on moving day.

Short on time? Our packing team can handle the fragile items or the entire house.

Set Up Heat and Utilities Before Moving Day

Make sure heat, electricity, and water are on at your new home at least a day before you arrive. Depending on your town, that may mean calling Central Hudson, Orange & Rockland, or NYSEG, and scheduling heating oil or propane delivery if the home uses it. If the home you’re leaving will sit empty, keep the heat on at a safe level so pipes don’t freeze.

A warm house on arrival makes unloading easier on everyone—and on your belongings.

Book Early—Especially Around the Holidays

Outside of the holidays, winter is often a quieter season for movers, which can make it easier to get the date you want. The weeks around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s fill up quickly, though, and so do the last few days of every month.

For most local moves, booking 2–4 weeks ahead is enough. For larger moves, plan on 4–8 weeks.

Use Short-Term Storage to Bridge the Gap

Winter closings don’t always line up. If you have to be out of one home before the next is ready, storage can keep your belongings safe in the meantime—and out of an unheated garage or shed.

We offer limited climate-controlled short-term storage. Ask about availability when you request your quote.
