A Village Shaped by the Canal
Wurtsboro's history is tied to the Delaware & Hudson Canal, which the Wurts brothers began building in 1825 to carry Pennsylvania coal to the Hudson River and on to New York City. The canal ran through the Mamakating valley, and a state historic marker in the village explains that Wurtsboro is named in honor of Maurice Wurts of the canal company, who had a mercantile business here.
Wurtsboro is also home to a glider airport that has been operating since 1927 and is often described as the oldest soaring site in the country.
