Between the Catskills and the Shawangunk Ridge
Ellenville sits in the Rondout Valley, where Route 52 meets Route 209, with the Catskills on one side and the Shawangunk Ridge on the other. The Shawangunk Scenic Byway runs right through the village. Long before the village existed, the Esopus Munsee people called the area Socconessing.
Ellenville also has a link to Orange County's industrial past. When the last of Walden's famous knife makers, Schrade, relocated in the 1950s, it moved its production to Ellenville.
